Hawaii is blessed with an all year round warm weather. That is why people from around the globe makes Hawaii as their favorite place to go when it's winter season. During this time prices go up and everything from hotels, flights to car rentals get really expensive.
My boyfriend and I plan on going to Hawaii this February and I am on a hunt for great deals and big discount. Starting from air flights I find myself spending hours and hours in sites like tripadvisor.com, hipmunk.com, islandair.com, hawaiianair.com and pacificwings.com to find the best deals. So far travel from Philadelphia to Honolulu can cost us around $650.00 to $700.00 per person round trip. That is if you travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Not a lot of people travel on Tuesday/Wednesday so price can be a real bargain. Our plan is to be in Hawaii for a month, visiting OAHU, MAUI and the Big Island.
Since we will be visiting three island I thought it would be smart to fly in Kona or Hilo (Big Island) and fly out from Honolulu (Oahu) or vice versa. This way we will save money on interisland flights. Flying directly to the island of your choice can save you a lot of money. Avoid flights that connects you to the other island as much as possible. Not only it is expensive but also you will find yourself spending half of your day in the airport. Not much fun if you ask me.
Anyway, after careful research it cost about $1600 to $1700 total depending on how comfortable I want our flights to be. Not bad I guess but still expensive. So I thought of how I can reduce it even more... the answer is priceline! Oh yeah, their "name your own price" can really help me with my dilemma. According from their site, you can save up to 40% off on air flights with their name your own price program. This is great because I could save big on air flights meaning instead of $650/$700 I could get the ticket for as little as $390/$420. The only catch is I have to bid on a round trip flight. This means if we fly from Philadelphia to Honolulu we have to take a flight from the last island we visit (say "big island") back to Honolulu then to Philadelphia to get the discount. Sounds like a lot of flight but I think it's worth it because I am actually saving up to $350/$400 with this itinerary. I think I would rather spend that on hotel or excursions...
