There are two ways to learn about Vatuwiri.
The first is to read below a history about the Tarte family
and its plantation. The second is to share your mealtimes
together with them all and to pick up one amazing nugget of
information after another during your days activities.
Originally
from England, James Valentine Tarte settled in Fiji in 1871
as part of a group of Fiji’s earliest European settlers.
The massive plantation has thrice transformed itself from
a cotton to sugar and then to copra production farming operation.
Currently Spencer Tarte, the 3rd generation owner guides Vatuwiri
through its next transformation from to that of a working
farm to one blended with a resort of unparalleled beauty and
diversity.
The forth generation of Tarte’s, Joanna, Marcus and
Edythe all incur massive responsibilities to maintain the
distinct operations of managing an estate that includes 1500
acres, an active copra production process that employs 80
local workers and houses their families on the estate, a cattle
farm 800 large, 150 piggery, 60 horses, vanilla production,
100 acres of cocoa and of course a world class resort and
an unending list of unforgettable activities.
Now the real way to learn “ABOUT US” is to listen
to Spencer weave one fascinating story after another about
the land, the history, the family, the people or any other
subject from the day's politics to centuries old nautical admiralty
chart making procedures that are still used throughout the Pacific.
You can learn about local fruit bats and Taveuni’s own
special varieties found nowhere else in the world, or about
the feral “bush” cats that survive in the hills
above or the nutritious and rare wing bean, or the orange
dove only indigenous to Taveuni, or you can learn about the
daily operation of the farm and all is inner workings, of
how a family has,
for almost 135 years, maintained a simple life based on one
world “ productivity”, rising early, working hard
all day and spending their evening as it should be, with each
other.
As interesting as all these facts and stories are, nothing
beats the stories of the Tarte family themselves, their past,
their current family boating trips, their love for Fiji, for
life, for their land and most importantly, for each other.
We invite you to join our family and share your experiences
with us to bring us all together in greater bond.
